From Storm Damage to Pure Magic: Our Jamaica Getaway at Riu Montego Bay

As we continue catching up on sharing our adventures from 2025, one trip that still feels like a dream was our December getaway to Jamaica.

What started with unexpected changes and uncertainty quickly turned into one of the most magical, relaxing, and joy-filled vacations we’ve had in a long time.

From catamaran cruises and waterfall climbs to glowing lagoons, poolside laughs, waterslide competitions, and unforgettable sunsets, this trip reminded us exactly why we love to travel — not just for the places themselves, but for the people, the memories, and the moments that stay with you long after you come home.

Arriving in Jamaica

Getting to Jamaica already came with a little bit of adventure.

Our original resort had unfortunately been closed due to hurricane damage, so we had to pivot and change plans before the trip even began. Thankfully, we ended up staying at the beautiful Riu Montego Bay — and honestly, everything worked out exactly the way it was supposed to.

While you could still see some of the storm’s impact around the island, one thing that stood out immediately was the resilience and warmth of the Jamaican people.

Several staff members actually thanked us for still choosing to visit Jamaica despite the hurricane damage, but honestly, we were the ones feeling thankful. Being able to support a country that depends so heavily on tourism while also experiencing the incredible culture, kindness, and beauty of Jamaica felt incredibly meaningful.

After a long travel day, our first evening was intentionally low-key: swimming, games, dinner, and an early bedtime.

And apparently our bodies needed it because we somehow slept for nearly 12 glorious hours.

Sunshine, Saltwater & Slowing Down

Our second day officially kicked vacation mode into full gear.

The day began with a resort scavenger hunt followed by how a tropical getaway should be: alternating between the beach and pool, soaking in the sunshine, swimming, relaxing, and simply enjoying the slower pace of island life.

Sometimes vacations don’t need packed itineraries to feel memorable.

Sometimes it’s just the feeling of warm sun, ocean air, tropical drinks, and finally allowing yourself to fully disconnect.

And honestly, after such a busy year, that was exactly what we needed.

Dunn’s River Falls: One of the Wildest Adventures We’ve Ever Done

One of the absolute highlights of the trip came during our excursion to Dunn's River Falls.

The day started with a catamaran ride and snorkelling adventure before eventually arriving at the famous waterfall.

Once we arrived, our guides gave us a quick explanation before it was time to begin the climb.

And wow… this was NOTHING like anything we had ever experienced before.

The rocks were slippery, the climb was intense, and there were definitely moments where we questioned our life choices while trying not to fall.

There were a few slips and near wipeouts along the way — don’t worry, everyone survived — but the experience itself was absolutely unforgettable.

At times it honestly felt like we were climbing through the middle of Jurassic Park.

The scenery was incredible, the water rushing around us made everything feel surreal, and the sense of accomplishment at the top made every difficult step completely worth it.

One thing we loved seeing was how many people of all ages successfully completed the climb. It was such a reminder not to let fear stop you from trying something adventurous.

And just when we thought the day couldn’t possibly get any more magical…

A rainbow appeared.

Right as Jean-Luc and I stepped back onto the catamaran.

Honestly? It felt like one of those little travel moments you couldn’t plan even if you tried.

The ride back to the resort quickly turned into a floating dance party filled with rum punch, music, dancing, and nonstop laughter.

If you’re ever debating whether to do the Dunn’s River Falls excursion — do it.

Yes, it’s challenging.

But it’s also one of the coolest experiences we’ve ever had.

Pool Days, New Friends & Waterslide Competitions

After the excitement of Dunn’s River Falls, Day 4 became our official relaxation reset.

No schedules.No rushing.No excursions.

Just pool time, sunshine, laughter, and spending time with new friends we had quickly bonded with throughout the week.

One of our favourite parts of this trip ended up being the people.

There’s something about resort vacations that makes strangers quickly start feeling like longtime friends, and by this point in the week, our group had completely clicked.

That energy carried right into Day 5 when things suddenly became… competitive.

What started as simple waterslides evolved into a full-blown waterslide competition complete with prizes.

And yes, Nick fully committed to the drama.

🏅 Most Flair – Nick

🏅 Fastest Slide – Also Nick

🏅 Loudest Scream – Roxanne

🏅 Longest Distance – Pam

🏅 Biggest Splash – Lauren

There may have been a few sore tailbones afterward, but honestly? Completely worth it.

These are the kinds of ridiculous moments that somehow end up becoming some of the best memories from a trip.

Swimming in Stardust at the Luminous Lagoon

As incredible as the waterslide competition was, the evening somehow became even more magical.

That night, we visited the famous Luminous Lagoon.

And honestly, it’s difficult to even properly describe the experience.

The lagoon is one of the few places in the world where microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates create bioluminescence in the water.

Meaning every movement causes the water to glow bright blue.

We took a short boat ride out into the lagoon before eventually jumping into the glowing water ourselves.

And it truly felt like swimming through stardust.

Unfortunately, photos barely capture what it actually looks like in person.

It’s one of those experiences you simply have to witness with your own eyes.

Without question, this became one of the most unique things we’ve ever done while travelling.

We wrapped up the evening back at the resort watching the nightly Riu show before finally heading to bed completely exhausted in the best way possible.

One More Catamaran Adventure

As the trip continued, we realized more and more how quickly the week was flying by.

One of our final major adventures was another catamaran excursion departing directly from the resort.

This time, around 20 of us boarded together for a 45-minute cruise to a peaceful snorkelling bay.

The snorkelling ended up being one of the best we’ve ever experienced.

Crystal-clear water, colourful fish everywhere, and one of those surreal moments where everything around you suddenly feels calm and quiet.

But of course… calmness only lasted so long.

Because the ride back quickly turned into another floating party complete with music, dancing, drinks, sunshine, and everyone fully embracing vacation mode one last time.

It was honestly the perfect balance of relaxation and celebration.

Saying Goodbye to Jamaica

As our final days arrived, we spent most of our remaining time exactly where we wanted to be: by the pool with friends, sharing stories, laughing, eating together, and trying to soak in every last moment.

By Day 7, we intentionally stopped taking photos altogether.

No phone. No camera. No documenting.

Just quiet time in the water, reflection, and enjoying the moment without worrying about capturing it.

And honestly, those sometimes end up being the most meaningful travel moments of all.

Looking back now, this trip gave us everything we needed.

Adventure. Relaxation. Friendship. Laughter. Connection. Sunshine. And memories we’ll carry with us for a very long time.

Thank you, Jamaica.

This trip truly felt like magic.

Looking Ahead to Future Adventures

Trips like this always remind us how important it is to make time for adventure, connection, and experiences that create lifelong memories.

And honestly? We’re already counting down to our next group getaways.

If travelling with an amazing community, beautiful destinations, and unforgettable experiences sounds like your kind of adventure, we’d absolutely love for you to join us on one of our upcoming trips:

Whether it’s relaxing on a beach, exploring a new country, dancing on a catamaran, or simply making memories with incredible people, we can’t wait to continue these adventures together. ✈️💛
